The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commitee (HREOC)
puplished in 1997 the report "bringing them Home" which verifies that
Aboriginal children were being forcibly taken from their families well
into the 1970s in order to integrate them into "white society"
In 1997 it was decided that a total of $63 million would be paid as
compensation for the injustice of breaking up families. By 1999 only a
quarter of this sum had been paid out, and the recommended founding of a
National Fund had not been acted upon.
All in all, it is clear that both national and interantional interest in
and action regarding rasism in Australian has weaken very substantially
since the end of the Olympic Games 2000.

consider the establishment of European Reconciliation Fund a long overdue
symbolic act which, more than merely contributing to discussions about
reconciliation, actively and concretely deals with the roots of this
injusice.
